Tips for choosing a good picture for your Silhouette Decal
(see below for tips on horse silhouettes)
What makes a good silhouette? A good photograph. Detail is everything. Below are some tips to help you take a great picture for your silhouette.
Be creative! Put siblings together in unique poses, have a younger child in the picture with pregnant mom, allow children to dress up or hold a favorite toy or book. The possibilities are endless!
1. Send us the highest resolution picture you can. The higher the resolution, the easier it will be to get all the great little details into your silhouette.
2. Take many pictures. The more pictures you take the better the chances are that you will get the perfect picture for your silhouette.
3. If you would like to have a full body silhouette done, be sure you capture your whole subject in the picture. Limbs and other body parts cannot be added if they are not included in the picture. For headshots, try to include the shoulder of your subject.
4. If possible, when taking your picture have your subject stand in front of a plain, solid color background. Again, this will help to get good detail.
5. Be level with your subject. If you are above your subject looking down or below your subject looking up, body parts and facial features will merge together and the outline of the subject will not be clearly defined.
6. Be directly in font of your subject with your subject looking away from you. Full side views work best for silhouettes. If you are taking a picture from an angle, either to the right or left of your subject, you will not be getting a true profile and facial features will not be clearly defined. If your subject is looking directly at you or away from you, you will loose all definition of facial features. Sometimes this is good in a full body silhouette, but does not work well for a headshot.
7. Spaces are a must for a good silhouette. Have spaces between limbs whenever possible. Even small spaces can add great dimension and depth to a silhouette. Keep chins up so they do not merge with the chest or shoulder, move arms out a bit away from the body to keep them from merging into the torso.
8. Keep hair well defined. If your subject has a ponytail, try to have a space between the hair and the back of the neck to add definition. Keep in mind that curly hair will simply have soft wavy edges in a silhouette.

Tips for Choosing a Good Picture for Your HORSE Decal
These rules are mostly the same for people, but other rules apply for dogs.
Not all pictures will make a good silhouettes so feel free to send me a few different pictures so that I can choose which will work best for your decal. Full side and ¾ views are best for silhouettes. Aside from hooves, I cannot add body parts to your horse. Spacing between legs / body parts helps to add good detail to your silhouette. The same goes for spacing between arms & head/neck in pictures with a rider. Choose your picture carefully.
These are few examples of good pictures and not so good pictures for a silhouette:
This is a good picture for a silhouette. All body parts are visible, the picture is clear and there is good spacing between the legs, head/neck, etc. to give the silhouette good detail.

This too is a good picture for the same reasons.
This picture would make an alright silhouette, but there is no spacing between the front legs and with the horse's head facing the camera, there is some loss of detail that will keep it from being a great decal.
While this is one of my favorite pictures of my mare, it will not make a good decal as you will not be able to see much detail. Her head would be lost in her neck and most of her body is missing in the picture.
This picture will be better for a headshot.
Not a good picture for a decal as not all of the horse is showing.
While this is a nice picture, the horse is too far away for me to be able to see the subject well enough.
